WHAT IS LEADERSHIP? WHO IS A LEADER?
Often
times, people attribute leadership to those occupying political offices, founders
& head of religious organizations, military and paramilitary heads and so
on. This assumption is completely wrong, because lead ers are everywhere. You
don’t even need a formal title to be a leader; a lot of notable leaders do not
hold any political post e.g. Jesus Christ, Michael Faraday, Aliko Dangote,
Pastor E.A Adeboye, Benjamin Franklin, Strive Masiyiwa, Azim Hashim Premji,
Bishop David Oyedepo etc. Who is therefore a leader? And what is leadership?
Leadership is encompassed in
taking the lead, setting the pace and blazing the trail. It is about laying
good, positive and result oriented examples that other people can follow.
Setting the pace as a leader could mean, establishing the speed at which the
group you are leading moves.
Leadership is vision. Leaders
must be visionary; leaders possess capacity to create a vision for the future.
A leader must have an idea of what he/she would like to achieve/accomplish in
the short-term, midterm and long-term future. Most leading organizations in the
world have a vision statement; all individuals with leadership potentials must
have a vision statement too.
